Nordic Walking for People with Parkinson’s
Come and join us - try walking with poles in a small, friendly group setting led by a trained instructor.
New Project!
We’ve partnered up with Parkinson’s UK to deliver a 12 week pilot programme of Nordic Walking for people living with Parkinson’s.
Nordic walking is walking with two poles that are specially designed for support, this enables a whole body workout and to get vigorous exercise from a walking activity.
Sessions will be led by Karen Powall. Karen is a qualified British Nordic Walking Instructor in Inverness. Support will also be available from Partnerships for Wellbeing volunteers who have received Parkinson's awareness training and have experience of Nordic Walking.
FREE - there is no charge for participation in these sessions thanks to funding from Parkinson's UK. Participants will be asked to complete a short survey at the beginning and end of the block to help us review the impact and seek additional funding for future sessions.
Are these sessions suitable for me?
These sessions will be suitable for people who can walk independently and are ideal for those with a new diagnosis, mild symptoms or whose symptoms are progressing.
"It’s a recognised fact that exercise does play an important role in slowing the effects of Parkinson's, and Nordic Walking has growing evidence of its suitability for both movement, stature, and boosting self-confidence."
— Richard Clifft, INWA Nordic Walking Instructor, Champion for Parkinsons UK - Richard also lives with Parkinson's himself.
